On September 11, the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor announced the detention of 48 lawyers and 7 interns, and on September 22, the Izmir Office of Chief Public Prosecutor issued a decision of detention of 32 lawyers. Six of the lawyers detained in Ankara were arrested, 15 lawyers were held under house arrest by wearing electronic handcuffs, 18 lawyers were given international travel ban.
It is essential that people who are engaged in a criminal procedure have the right to legal assistance in the best way possible. They have the right to choose their own lawyer and the lawyer has the right to organize the defense as he or she wants and has the right to speak up freely. Only in this manner is a fair trial possible.
The harassments and persecutions of lawyer are again a clear violation of the very basic principles of the rule of law, essential in a democratic country. This violations of the rule of law must stop immediately.
